Biography

Aysel was born in the Azerbaijani capital Baku, the youngest of the three daughters of a journalist and a university professor. She is a descendant of the nineteenth-century Azeri publicist Hasan bey Zardabi.[1] Aysel started to sing at the age of four and the piano became her passion since childhood.[2] Aysel's parents keep an eighteenth-century piano at home.[2]

Aysel graduated from the Intellect Lyceum in Baku and attended Texas High School (Texarkana, Texas) in 2005–2006. Within days of her arrival in the United States, she signed up for the local choir and began training for young vocalists competitions.[2] While in the U.S., Aysel won 3 gold medals at prestigious contests which were held in the Southern Arkansas University and in the University of Texas at Austin.[2] In 2005, she participated in Season 4 of the national song contest Yeni Ulduz. As of January 2009, Teymurzadeh was majoring in International Relations at the Azerbaijan University of Languages.[3]

Eurovision

In January 2009, Teymurzadeh was selected internally by İTV to represent Azerbaijan in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 in Moscow, Russia along with Iranian-Swedish singer Arash[4] with the song "Always". Aysel became the first female singer to represent the country at the Eurovision Song Contest and only the second act ever to do so. On May 16, 2009, Aysel Teymurzadeh and Arash finished third with 207 points, among the 25 performers that qualified for the Eurovision final.[5]

Aysel together with Arash became the winner of the 4th Annual ESC Radio Awards in the category of the Best Group.[6]

European tour

On May 28, Teymurzadeh announced going on a European tour with Arash, involving concerts in countries such as Sweden, Greece and Russia.[7]

In an interview with BBC Persian Television, he has mentioned that his mother and father are from the Iranian cities of Shiraz and Isfahan, respectively.[10]

When he was 10 years old, his family moved to Uppsala, Sweden before moving to Malmö five years later. The city Arash considers as his hometown is Malmö where he lives when he is not on tour. He has two younger brothers, Ashkan Labaf, a doctor and Arsalan Labaf, a lawyer.

Career

His debut album, Arash, was released by the Warner Music Sweden in June 2005, after he had finished college. His singles, "Boro Boro" ("Go Away") and "Temptation" (featuring Rebecca Zadig) made it to the hit lists around Europe, and their respective videos garnered significant airplay on more than 20 MTV outlets across the world.

In addition to successes in his home countries' music charts, namely Sweden and Iran, the platinum-selling singer and producer Arash has had hits notably in Eastern European and South-East European charts like Russia, Ukraine, Greece, Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Romania, Turkey and in Asian music charts like in Israel, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and throughout the Arab Middle Eastern countries.

This song was also featured in the Hindi Bollywood film "Bluffmaster" and he was The Artist of The Month on MTV India. He made a guest appearance in the movie as well as a DJ singing "Buro Buro". Arash has accumulated airplay on MTV outlets in more than 35 countries.

Arash is managed by former Warner Music A&R agent Henrik Uhlmann, and is represented in the United States by Mayar Zokaei.

Collaborations

Arash's claim to fame, his hit "Temptation" was a collaboration with Swedish singer Rebecca Zadig. Arash had an initial minor hit with the song done solo, but his duo with Rebecca Zadig made him much better known.

Another collaboration of Arash was with Indian-Persian-Pakistani-Danish singer Anila Mirza in the hit "Chori Chori" and the three-way collaboration between Arash / Aneela / Rebecca Zadig in "Bombay Dreams"

Arash has released a Russian song; "Восточные Сказки" (Vostotchyie Skazki) (featuring Блестящие Blestyashchie), a Russian version of "Temptation", in which he sings in Russian and the Russian version became a big hit in Russian charts.

DJ Aligator (also of Persian origin) appeared in Arash's music video for "Music is My Language" as the producer and rapper.

The song "Suddenly" features Rebecca Zadig.

In his 2006 album (Crossfade), Arash, DJ Aligator and Shahkar Bineshpajoo made a song for the Iranian Football team for their appearance in the 2006 World Cup.

Arash released in March 2008 his third album, "Donya," featuring amongst many, a reggae/dancehall influenced single and music video "Donya" in collaboration with Shaggy and the single "Kandi" featuring the New York star Lumidee.

From "Donya" he has so far released the title track Donya (featuring Shaggy), Suddenly (featuring Rebecca), Kandi (with Lumidee), Pure Love (featuring Helena) and soon to be the final single, Dasa Bala (featuring Timbuktu). Music videos were made for Donya, Suddenly and Pure Love, while Kandi was sent to radio only. It is not yet known is Dasa Bala will be released only to radio, or whether a music clip will be made for it.

In early 2009, it was revealed that the Azerbaijani entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 will be the song Always which was written and composed by Arash. The song was performed by Aysel Teymurzadeh and Arash in a duet in semifinal 2 of the Eurovision competition.[11][12] It qualified for the final and on the Eurovision song contest final on Saturday 16th May 2009, scored as the third most popular song (narrowly missing out to Iceland for the 2nd place).
